Bee colonies in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have had a rocky past. But in December 2015, as part of Yas Marina’s social investment in the Kurdistan region, beekeeping supplies, equipment and modern apiculture training were provided to families from local villages. In less than a year, the bee colonies—and the businesses of the entrepreneurial families—were flourishing, and have tripled in number along with growing sales of honey and other byproducts.
